Larry “LAJ” J. Smith

Dynamic, talented, and passionate are the best words to describe saxophonist, vocalist, musician, and composer LAJ. His style is a unique blend of jazz, soul, and hip-hop.

LAJ, born Larry J. Smith II, lives and breathes music. His love for this art is vividly displayed in his performances and compositions. This Miami native began playing the alto saxophone at the age of 11. He learned quickly and his passion and inquisitiveness lead him to master all instruments in the saxophone family and other instruments such as drums, keyboards, and bassoon. He got his start playing in church and continued to grow as a musician at Miami Norland Senior High where truly began to master his craft.

His innate talent and ability afforded him the opportunity to receive a scholarship to study Jazz at Florida A & M University. During his college career, LAJ had the honor of being a member of the world famous “Marching 100” Marching Band where he eventually became a rank sergeant, traveling across the world, and making appearances on shows such as “Good Morning America” . As a core member of the jazz band, he’s been blessed with incredible opportunities to play along with legendary musicians such as Pam Laws, Scotty Barnhart of the Count Basie Orchestra, and Seneca Black from the Wynton Marsalis Orchestra. While at FAMU he also served as saxophonist for Rap and R&B Sensation T-Pain.

After graduating from FAMU with a degree in Jazz Studies and Commercial Music LAJ received an invitation to be the featured Saxophone Soloist for CAMI and Halftime Live LLC’s production of DrumLine Live, which is a musical stage play based on the HBCU Marching Band experience. His solo in the production has been known to bring many to there feet while at the same time leaving others in shock and some in tears. The production has traveled Nationally and Internationally for 4 years.

After traveling and playing around the world LAJ has had time to release his first album entitled “Love Jones”. On this album he blends and mixes the sounds of jazz, hip-hop and his personal sense of soul to deliver musical confessions on the ups and downs of Love. The album features guest appearances by the up and coming Southern Hip-Hop Duo known as The “Educated Hustlers” and Eyme XY from the group “2 Squared” who was a highlight on the hit musical based reality show The X-Factor.
