Aaron McCoy hails from the beautiful city of Va. Beach, Virginia. His early school years are where he fell in love with the saxophone and music. Initially, music was introduced by church and family. His craft was enhanced during his high school years at Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk, Virginia, under the direction of Mr. Elston Fitzgerald.
Under the direction of Fitzgerald, Aaron’s art matured from notes to music. During this time he was easily recognized as a top performer by peers and teachers alike. Shortly their after innovation to perform in shows, events, and traveling plays begin to present itself. Mutual scholarships, during his junior year, were offered by University Band Directors. In the end, Shaw University is where Aaron earned his undergraduate education.
While at Shaw University Aaron was a member of the Concert Band, Marching Band, Jazz Bands I and II, Pep Band, where he became the Pep band Director for 3 years. As Pep Band Director. His passion and energy awarded him highlight interviews as well as articles in the News & Observer. During his tenure at Shaw he founded Mixed Water, an R&B and Jazz band made up of his music peers. The band first started performing on campus which catapulted them to be the house band for Zydeco Downtown, a jazz lounge in Raleigh, N.C. This, in turn, awarded the band performances national as well as international.
Since his 2005 graduation, Aaron has explored different opportunities to share his love of music. He has done this by teaching in the N.C. public school system by being an as stance jazz band Dir. and woodwind instructor for South East Raleigh High, and Knightdale High School. At the same time announcing and instructing for Shaw University “Platinum Sound Marching Band”.
Aaron has performed with National Recording Artist such as Shirley Caesar, Melvin Williams, LeeAnne Faine, Donald Lawrence, Gerald Hinton, CoCo McMillian and Yolanda Adams. Also Peabo Bryson, Chrisette Michelle, The Manhattans, Lenny Williams, The O’jays’s and many others.
Aaron currently performs with many different bands such as Mixed Water, Liquid Pleasure, Physcodelic Soul, Soul Blues Singer Lacey, Static Band, Joey Holloway Project, just to name a few. Aaron is currently on an international tour with Who’s Bad The Ultimate Michael Jackson Tribute Band.
As a member of the Mj tribute band not only is he the saxophonist but background singer and dancer. As a vital member of the band openings for solos has become more prominent.
Aaron’s saxophone is a part of who he is. It speaks to his love for music. His motto is, “It’s just like Master Card, you never leave home without it.”
